Sparking A Conversation: To Link Aadhar.. Or Not To?
In our next addition to the 'Sparking A Conversation' series, Ali Khan Mahmudabad discusses the growing role of unique identification in India, namely Aadhar. Khan argues that it is financial institutions and other such organisations who benefit from the big data provided by UIDAI, made worse by the government wanting to integrate Aadhar with as many public schemes as possible. The question that thus arises is “Who truly benefits from unique identification - the citizens for whom it was intended to make using government services easier, or the government by profiting off people's private information?”
Khan argues that the reason there is a separation in the three governmental wings of the government - the legislature, judiciary and executive - is for the government to keep checks and balances on itself. Thus, the government is supposed to keep the people as its priority, by ensuring their rights and freedoms. Despite this, we see the government pushing, almost threatening, citizens to link their bank accounts and mobile numbers to Aadhar, stating that there will be a suspension of services if there is a failure to comply. Moreover, while the government claims that Aadhar is optional, it is very hard today to use any government service without it. Such an insistence can only be explained if there is government incentive behind the push; Khan argues that this incentive is big data. Using Aadhar for government schemes can also record lifestyles, habits, spending patterns and other such personal information, which people may not be comfortable sharing.
Other than the growing threat of surveillance, there also exists the threat to privacy, as seen when 130 million people’s personal information was leaked through just four government websites. This is not even accounting for the amount of data sold by insurance and telephone companies. Thus, with the ‘ulterior motives’ of the government and private companies being highlighted, a serious discussion on the need for privacy must begin in order to maintain a stable democracy and ensure people's basic civil liberties are being upheld. -

Sparking A Conversation: Ethos of National Anthems
In the next video in our 'Sparking A Conversation' series, Ali Khan Mahmudabad explores the ideas behind a country's national anthem. Should it be law to stand up and sing one's national anthem, or should such an act stem naturally from people who feel love and respect for their homeland?
A certain country's sense of nationalism does not exist without any context, much like the rules and traditions of several main religions. It follows that a country's national anthem is also contextualized based on issues faced by that country at the time it is written. While Germany has a militaristic anthem stemming from the invasion of France at the time it was made, India's anthem highlights the diversity of its citizens, as it was created during the British rule, a time when the nation had to come together and fight.
However, while national anthems may be symbols of patriotism, it is not necessary for people to feel love or respect for one's country when it is played. Such a love or one's country must be brought about organically, such that a person, purely out of love and respect for their nation, willingly rises when the anthem plays. True nationalism only comes from someone's own volition, and not in fear of an FIR. -
Sparking a Conversation: The Taj Mahal Controversy
'Sparking a Conversation' is a video series aimed at creating a conducive environment for well-informed discussion, steeped in extensive research. With an array of well-reputed inter-disciplinary speakers, it adds new dimensions to existing conversations.
Recently, BJP MLA Sangeet Som claimed that the Taj Mahal is a ‘blot on Indian culture’ as it was ‘built by a tyrant’ and thus should be destroyed. Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath also made some controversial statements regarding the monument, saying that it was not part of Indian history as it was a Muslim structure.
In this video, Ali Khan Mahmudabad explores the role monuments play in the shaping of a country’s history. Historical structures symbolise the expression of patriotism, and when these structures are obliterated, the roots that tie a community to the country gets tarnished. The debate here is not ‘why you love your country, but about how you express that love’. Curbing the expression of love for one’s country leads to rootlessness, pushing the dream of a secular India further away from our grasp.
The Taj Mahal is one such structure that roots Muslims to Indian culture, and even the discourse of such a monument being excluded from history threatens the fabric of patriotism Muslims have built over the past few centuries. Moreover, the Taj Mahal has been engrained in Indian heritage since its inception, and its removal has implications for the country at large, not just the Muslim community.
